Scout Uniform

As a troop, we have a lot of work to do with our uniforms. I am in the process of picking up a new uniform. The one I have from my teens is a little snug. Please make efforts to obtain a new uniform for your scout. We have soem events coming up that we want to make sure we look somewhat official. Please let me know if you have any issues with this. You can get everything you need at the Boy Scout Office.

The BSA Centennial Uniform

Design for the latest boy scout uniform came out in August, 2008. The colors are pretty much the same so new uniform pieces can be transitioned as old ones are outgrown. A big difference is red shoulder loops and unit numbers are now forest green. The uniform is promoted as more versatile and wearable in the field instead of just for meetings.

March Camp Out

Troop 900 ventured out on another overnight camp out in March. With snow still on the ground, we opted for a cabin at Camp Lazarus.

Q was also in charge of starting the fire while the other boys gathered wood. Good work Q! I'm pretty sure you used only one match...

The troop kept warm by the fire as they prepared the coals for dinner.

Tin foil dinners for everyone. What a treat!

Todd went for a classic meal of beef, potatoes, and carrots. Old reliable!

Ian got creative. I'm not sure what it was but we know it was done. You can see the extra toasty outer crust. Yummy!

Jacob went for a quick and easy technique. Two frozen pizza's stacked on top of each other. He seems to be enjoying it...

The night ended with a few games. We started with Clove Hitch on a Tree. Here you see Q and Ben battling it out in a round of Bull Riders.

Troop Leadership

Troop 900 selected its leadership for the next 6 months. We still have more to do, but this was a big step for our troop:

After we finished with our voting and other business, the troop had a good game of SPUD!

Citizenship in the Community (#5)

Our scout activity on March 3rd included a viewing of the classic Disney movie "Follow Me Boys". This will complete requirement #5 on the Citizenship in the Community merit badge. When the boys meet with the merit badge counselor, they will need to discuss what they learned from the movie and what it means to be a valuable and concerned member of the community.

Citizenship in the Community (#1, 2, 6)

Our scout activity on Feb 17th included discussion of requirements 1, 2, and 6 for the Citizenship in the Community Merit badge. Here are some pictures and notes from that meeting.

We discussed what it takes to be a good citizen in the community. We discussed the rights, duties, and obligations of citizenship, and how we could demonstrate good citizenship in your community, Scouting unit, place of worship, or school.

We pointed out and located primary government buildings along with Fire, Police, and Hospital services. Here are a few we discussed:

Orange Township Board of Trustees
Nelson Katz
Chairman
Trustee Nelson Katz is the newest addition to the Orange Township Board of Trustees. Elected in November of 2007, Nelson is employed by Exact Software Americas as an Application Developer. He has been with the company for over 11 years. He has held positions in the insurance, industrial and manufacturing fields ranging from programmer to senior analyst over the past 30 years.

John M. Cassady
Vice-Chairman
Trustee John Cassady was elected to his first term November 8, 2005. He currently serves as trustee liaison for public safety. Cassady is an attorney and resides in Waverly Place with his wife Beth and three children, Jay, Natalie and Lindsey.

Robert W. Quigley
Trustee
Trustee Robert Quigley was elected to his first term November 3, 2009. Robert is employed by U.S. Bank as the Vice President of Strategic Alliances for the National Government Banking Division and resides in Wilshire with is wife Stacy and two children, Aidan and Alayna.

The discussion wrapped up with a review of other Tax Funded Services in our community. The ones we talked about included the Library, Recreation Center, Public Transportation, and Public Safety.

Let's get it started!

Troop 900 embarked on it's first overnight camp out as a troop to the remote Camp Lazarus. We all survived and made it back in one piece. The picture above was obviously taken during warmer times. It was cold and plenty of snow was provided by mother nature. We had 7 boys in total from our troop with 2 leaders. We owe thanks to the Powell Ward for letting us be their guests!
The boys warmed up by the fire as they cooked up a hot dog dinner.

Some even topped off their dogs with a little cheese whiz... Mmmmmm!

The dogs were followed up with toasty smores. Josh and Ian are debating if these mellows are medium or well done.
